How does Quicken actually keep track of my money?

January 13th, 2013 1 comment

I am considering purchasing Quicken but I’d like to know more about how it keeps track of my money… does it have a check registry or a way to ‘balance my books’? I guess what I mean is, can I use Quicken as my checkbook instead of pencil and paper like I use now? Can someone fill me in? The website wasn’t very helpful. Thanks.

Quicken and the whole genre of personal finance software does the most basic of functions: help you keep track of your finances.

One of the first things I did when I got Quicken for the first time was trash my paper checkbook register and keep all of my transactions on Quicken. Then, when the end of the month arrived and I got my statement, I used the Reconcile feature to balance the books. No more pencil and paper reconciling anymore for me.

It can do a whole lot more than that, with downloading transactions directly from financial institutions, forecasting income and investment performance, and so forth. But the basics, definitely no problem.

Can Quicken download my previous banking/credit information from this year?

I just bought Quicken Deluxe 2009 (This is my first personal finance software purchase – I have NO idea what I’m doing). I love that the program can show spending per category, and income information, but I noticed that after linking to my online banking it only includes information for the past month. Is there a way to get the rest of my history on there short of entering it by hand? Should I have waited to install it until Jan 1st?

The Online Banking services I have used with various banks (Chase, Bank of America, MBNA, American Express,…) by default only download the previous statement’s transactions, or about one month’s worth of transactions.

You may have to specify a longer period in Online Banking when downloading or choose an earlier period and download for that period and each earlier period. It’s less an issue of Quicken functionality and has more to do with how far back Online Banking goes for your bank. Try contacting them or checking the help in Online Banking. Chances are they go back no more than a year and possibly as little as 90 days in available online data.

Good luck!

Is there any personal finance software?

I’m looking one that is calendar based so I can input our bills when they come out and get them to adjust to our day to day income balance to see how much will be left after each bill. That sounds confusing. Basically I can input every penny I make at any time and it will adjust to tell me how much I will have after each bill. Is there anything like that?

Have you tried Mint.com?
The downside is that you have to give them your bank’s password and ID.
This makes most people with balances worth anything sweat buckets.

I use a program called Quicken Personal.
Found it at walmart for about $30.
Next to the printer cartridges
It is a check register, and it shows you where all your money is going.
It has pie charts that you can adjust and shows you what %, you are spending on what, and how much money you are saving.
No need to tie it to online sites (but they do offer this option).

I used to use AceMoney Lite.
Also very good. And no need to go online.
Found it free online years ago – no catches or gotchas.
Downside, only lets you keep one account

what is the best personal finance software with respect to cost?

Depends on your goal. If it is just to keep track of your checking & savings account, Quicken will do.

If you want to do a budget, then I suggest either Crown Financial software for budgets and getting out of debt or Dave Ramsey’s budget software and getting out of debt (he has a free one on line or a more detailed one for under $20). Links are below.

Personal Finance Software for expatriates?

I’m a Canadian living in the United Arab Emirates and need a
budgeting program that is compliant with my lifestyle. I hold assets in multiple currencies so this would be a key feature that I’d be looking for. If there is something out there that supports international stock markets, even better. Is there such a program out there?? any info would be appreciated.

I don’t know of any off-the-shelf commercial software that has these capabilities.
