I wrote this for a SAT I prompt for practice, and I hope someone can grade it on a scale of 0-12. The prompt was on whether or not we need to look closer at issues and topics to truly understand them. Please grade it holistically, as a whole.
The discussion that dominates conversation often points to the question of how deep people need to look into a topic to fully understand it. Although first impressions and quick glances may provide a seemingly complete picture, there is always uncovered information that has the potential to change the entire situation. As the Cold War origins and the American Revolution demonstrate, what something seems to be is not always what it is.
The Cold War origins seem like common knowledge to many people, but only close inspection can reveal the conflict between equality and freedom. Much of the general public assumes that the Cold War came to be through the creation of weapons of mass destruction, but it actually originated from the mistrust between the USSR and the US. As the US and its allies released land from Nazi rule, they applied democratic reforms to help put these countries back into the world economy. But as the USSR took over land, it imposed strict policies. Much of the American aid was offered to the USSR, but this only fueled the tension because Russia saw how American aid turned countries democratic. They rejected both the Marshall Plan (financial aid) and UN membership and built up its own Communist version of economic packages and alliances. A casual glance on the Cold War could not have discovered the true origins. Only a close study of all the factors involved could unearth this new look.
In addition, the fact that not all the Americans were for the American Revolution could not be discovered by a quick analysis. During the war, there was actually a 20% portion of the colonial population that did not support the war against Britain. Closer inspection can reveal the truth and concrete details on the object or event of study, while a quick glance may actually deceive people. As the origins of the Cold War and the lack of unity during the American Revolution demonstrate, only deep inspection can reveal the true answers to questions.
