Can anyone help me with starting a budget?

November 20th, 2012 Leave a comment Go to comments

I have struggled and struggled in starting a personal budget is there anyone out there who can help me start a personal budget that I can stick too? Or do you know of any sites that I can go to who will help me in starting a personal budget. Or, maybe a company that specializes in planning a personal budget. Help Please.

first make a list of the monies you make each year (salary, income, alimony, et cetera)… then make a list of the expenses you have (only the must stuff like car payment, food, utilities, sex lubricant)… then subtract the two and as long as you make more than you spend you are okay…

check out quicken.com or yahoo finance for real in depth assistance…

Good luck

Don’t eat out, or at fast food places. Buy the generic forms of tylenol, and such. That’s not exactly a budget but it’s a start.

Make a list: what you need vs. what you want. It helps. trust me. Figure out how much money you have. Then prioritize. make sure you save some. It’s easy.

start with how much you have for income, then minus the rent, and essential utilities – gas, electric, water, and cable (the minium, so you will have something to do at home), car payment, gas money for going to work. Then you can see how much money you have to "budget".
Lots money issue is based on how to cut down on your life style, like not buying expensive jewelery, go to nail salon every 10 days instead of 7 days. Drink less etc…

What I have done in the past is to break down all of my finances into stupidly small numbers. First, take all of your post-tax earnings per month and then all of your bills per month, when they are due, and how much they are. I suggest using a number higher than minimum due on items like credit cards.
The next thing to do is figure out what is left after bills.

Then, figure out your weekly cost for fuel/food, and subtract that from the remaining balance.

Once you do this, you can figure out how much money you are losing track of through bad spending by month/day/week….IT’s a real eye opener honestly.

When I did this, I figured out that I was somehow wasting $25 a DAY, and I could never figure out how I was always broke. Then, you simply set a limit of that extra money for extra spending like going out to eat and movies and whatnot…

That should help you save some money up! Good luck!

First, know where all your money is. Such as all the debts that you have, credit cards, department store credit cards, auto loans, personal loan, computer loan, student loan, and any other money that you owe to someone or an entity. How much are you making a month (after tax)? What are the rent, utilities, water, phone bills, and etc. Any type of insurances (auto, renters, house) that you pay every six month or every year. How much is your grocery per month, gasoline (for transportation). Gather all the info together now, and list them as OUT (unfortunately for everyone, mostly is OUT – bills), and any IN (any incomes or money that is coming in to you). Take all the INs (add up the total) to subtract the OUTs (EVERYTHING that you have to pay), do you have a positive number or negative? If is negative, you will have to start to cut your spending on unnecessary stuffs FIRST, then move on the stuffs that you really need but can pay less (such as cell phone bill, so you really need a cell phone? Or can you cut down the monthly service fee from $150 down to $40?). There is your basic on how to budget yourself. When you get a negative number, it is very obvious that you are living above your means (that you cannot afford or support). Do remember to focus on paying off DEBTS. Good luck!

After you get a grasp of above, post more questions in the future.

get a pen. piece of paper. write down all your bills rent utilties cell etc…food gas savings entertainment etc..first make sure your in the positive. What I do is I use my spreadsheet on my comp. write down all my bills including savings. but not including things like food, gas for your car, or entertainment..(things that vary)…..I get paid 2x month. so i take the total of all my Bills which is 1200..and each paycheck I take 600. put into a separate checking account just for my bills then rest of the money goes to food, gas, entertainment, shopping etc…and youll learn to budget better when "extra" money isnt there tempting you. make sure you pay all your bills out of the account that is just for your bills. that way you have 2 account one you can spend the other you pay bills out of. It keeps things simple!!!!!!1

If you are having a hard time sticking to a budget, you may not be checking in with your spending habits soon enough. Start banking and paying bills on line and check payments every week, do not wait until the end of the month when the funds are too small. The weekly check in can make a big difference.

As far as a budget: You need to first decide between needs and wants. Look at your needs and see if you really can cut those down a little. For example, if a hair cut is a need, then maybe you can find someone to do just a good a job but cheaper or maybe you can stretch the next cut out a week later.

Do not look at this as something negative or a punishment as some people do. Looking for ways to save money can actually be fun, kinda like a game. So first…change your attitude about it.

It is important to be on the look out for ways to save money. If you currently shop at a nearby market and buy prepackaged snacks such as the handy 100 calorie packets for example, try buying from a wholesale or discount mark and make out your own 100 calorie packs. It may seem like too much hassle at first but be sure to actuallly think about how much money you save each time you do it. Then put that money aside for a vacation fund, stocks, or retirement. If you stick to your thrifty life styles you will have a pretty nice retirement nest started in only a few years.

After determing your needs (serious ones) then whatever money you have left over will be money to work with for "wants". Be sure to find cheaper alternatives to any services or products you may use and have some money set aside for emergencies.

If you have excel it is easy, if not pen and paper work as well.
    Column # 1)
Write down all of the income you will make in a month including dates.
    Column # 2)
Write down all of the bills that cannot be paid off like utilities, cable, phone bills, groceries, etc. include mortgage (or rent) and savings here.
    Column # 3)
Write down things that CAN be paid off in order from smallest balance to largest, write down the minimum payments for each item. Things in this are will be credit card bills, loans things like that. Pay AS MUCH AS YOU CAN towards the smallest balance item in this list.
    Column # 4)
Write down luxuries you will be getting in a month like going to the movies, eating at a nice restaurant, buying gifts, throwing parties stuff like that.

    There is your budget.

    Goals for each column
#1 increase amount by as much as possible
#2 see if you can reduce as possible all items in this column
#3 pay off all items in this column
#4 keep this column to a minimum.

Always pay yourself, if you have not started a savings plan take baby steps towards it like 1% of your income, say you make $100 a week put $1 into savings towards your emergency savings, no ifs, and or buts. Don’t take this money out unless it is an emergency, if you can afford more than 1% than do it, but work your way up to 10% of your income.

Send me a pm if you need more help.

Go to Dave Ramsey’s web site. He does a radio talk show where people call in and discuss their financial problems.
