I don’t know anything about money, how to save it, or to invest it. where can I enrol in a short (but thorough) personal finance course that covers the basics of savings and investment?

Well, I live in the U.S. and could be COMPLETELY wrong, but I believe the college I attended does correspondence with UK schools in our Business Dept. I am led to believe this was either @ Cambridge or Oxford. The course might cost a bit, but I’m sure it will be very thorough.
If that’s not a viable option, try to find an online financial advisor company. They will have a wealth of information on these subjects as they deal with it on a daily basis.

How about you visit http://www.cfp.net, you will find a professional view! But, take care, before you join the course, you must ask yourself whether you can put 15-20 hours weekly in studying, or not. Don’t waste any money!
