Why are Americans against government health care?
I live in Australia where we have free government health care (tax payer funded), with the option of also utilising Private health care, this system works well in ours and many other countries, where sick and injured people are treated equally regardless of finances and no one becomes bankrupt due to health care costs, so why are many Americans against this?
Because a lot of Americans still have a fading streak of individualism and a belief in personal responsibility over government nanny-stateism.
It isn’t that most Americans are against various health care reform initiatives. Most Americans can agree that the system has some flaws and that certain specific measures can and should be taken to reform it. Where we disagree is on the CURRENTLY PROPOSED fix.
I am pro health care reform in a lot of ways, but THIS BILL, the one they are trying to ram through Congress, THIS BILL sucks.
And back to the first point, while a lot of Americans do feel sorry for those that honestly cannot afford care, we also do NOT want to be made financially responsible for those that refuse to take care of their own health to begin with. People like this lady, who I’ll have to pay for under a government system:

Why should my hard earned property be confiscated to pay for someone like this? Someone not just "down on their luck," but KNOWINGLY making bad health choices and INTENTIONALLY seeking to exacerbate them?
There are also many other issues to consider before handing the government this power:
1) Is it even Constitutional?
2) Can we afford it (we’re already running the world’s largest debt at more than 12 TRILLION dollars. Can we afford another costly, inefficient government program?)
3) What mechanisms are in place to prevent abuse? Let’s say you go into the doctor for a blood test. As the government is paying for it, who’s to say they won’t use that as an excuse to violate doctor/patient confidentiality and use the blood sample to run a DNA test for a comparison to open criminal cases? I’m not saying they will, but by giving government control of health care, you are handing them a LOT of power and there’s nothing explicit in most of these bills telling them how they can and cannot use that power.
4) Why not start with multiple smaller reforms bills FIRST (tort reform, protections against defensive medicine lawsuits, allowing interstate private insurance competition, etc) instead of jumping into the deep-end of the pool with a massive and unproven reform bill that shifts power to the government?
Etc.
The list goes on and on.
Nothing against Australia, either, but your total population is what? 21? 22 million? Ours is 300+ million. Our costs would be orders of magnitude more than yours. 22 million only covers the number of illegal aliens here. My state’s population alone is 25 million. It’s apples and oranges. There are a lot of programs that work well on a smaller scale that simply do not translate to a larger one.
Because the federal government is not granted the authority by the Constitution to mandate or provide nationalized healthcare in this country. I’m glad that you enjoy your healthcare, but it’s not applicable here. It’s unconstitutional.

Health care in America is NOT a right. It is wrong to knock on Joe’s door and force him to hand over some of the money he has worked hard to earn so it can specifically be used to pay for the health care of his neighbor, especially if his neighbor is a fat and lazy excuse for a human being who doesn’t want to take care of himself and who hasn’t cared very much about succeeding in the world. Joe works hard and he should make his OWN decisions about who his money helps.
Government SHOULD work VERY hard to make health care available and affordable to ALL, but taking money from people and raising taxes to hand out free health care, that’s not American, it’s wrong.

We do not know the price tag or what is covered. Every other program our government operates is a total failure. Full of Fraud, Corruption, Over Budget and unable to meet the needs of the people.
They could not even get the Swine Flu Vaccine to the people in time. What was delivered had to be returned because of spoilage. And we should trust this system with our lives. think not

Because how can we trust a government that has turned our country into a Complete Police State. A control grid. Americans spend more of there budget on health care, percantage wise, then Australia does yet they don’t have public healthcare and Australia does. I’d really like to know what exactly does America spend that money on.
