April 27th, 2012 2 comments

I want to create a personal finance website/blog. What are somethings that you would want to read and/or learn about on the site?

personal finance articles, for sure. methods of asset allocation.

investment ideas. market trends.

tax tips. updated rates of mortgages, loans, savings, cds.

What are some good books about learning the basics of Personal finance?( Canada)?

I’m looking for a book about personal finance. A book that explains in a simple vocabulary, how to:

– budget/manage your money
-TIps on do’s and don’t about money. Depending in what cycle you are ( ex, close to retirement, what not to do with your money)
– Information about Garanteed investments Certificates.
– Canada Bonds
-Basic information about Mutual Funds
– Information about life insurance (Is it good to let go of it when in mid 50’s?If not why? what are the dangers of not having one?)

-RESPs

and tips on to make the most of your money and make it last.

THE BOOK MUST BE IN FRENCH!!!!

** The book I’m looking for is for a recent widow who’s husband was the one taking care of the finances. I want to find a book for her so that she can know more of what is out there. What to watch out for and how to be more financialy independant and financialy wise.

book called financial accounting

What is the best personal finance magazine focusing on how to spend your money, savings tips, etc.?

I know that Money and Kiplingers focus on investments and 401k which are good things that I already do, I’m more interested in reading article and tips on other things dealing with money. Thanks.

You can try Smart Money. They have quite a few interesting articles.

But, Money magazine has lots of personal interest stories like how a guy deals with a father having Alzheimer’s, or how a family tries to live according to their religion and be financially astute.

I would say that Money magazine is thus far the best magazine I have read which covers all topics related to finance.

Does anyone know of a good website to help with personal finance budgeting?

My husband is not the best at saving money and it has hurt our bank accounts lately, so I was hoping I could find a decent website to give him some pointers and maybe create a monthly budget for him. It would be useful if the website had some type of budgeting worksheet.

Here are a couple useful websites:

http://www.choosetosave.org/

http://elearning.mindyourfinances.com/Calculators/tabid/820/Default.aspx

http://www.fdic.gov/consumers/consumer/moneysmart/mscbi/mscbi.html

http://www.mymoney.gov/

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Quicken Mac vs Moneywell vs Moneydance: which personal finance software is better?

April 27th, 2012 2 comments

I have a Mac and want the best Personal Finance software, which is it? Quicken Mac 2007/Essentials, Moneywell, or Moneydance?

I’ve not used the others but, am a power Quicken user. I highly recommend it. You can track anything financial and know your net worth at a glance.

A serious drawback is Intuit’s "Sunset," policy. They’ve moved to a subscription service without notifying users. That is, after three or four years, Intuit will no longer allow older versions of Quicken to download stock quotes. Users can still enter them by hand; there’s just no more one click download for all your securities. It’s complete nonsense.

Good "Personal Finance 101" type of book for early career types?

April 27th, 2012 6 comments

Just looking for a decent book that’s sort of a ‘finance 101’ type of thing. There’s a ton of these types of books out there, just wondering what’s a good one so I’m not wasting my time.

I’m in my 20’s and have some of the basics covered (IRA, 401k, high-interest checking/savings) and am now starting to get more serious about this stuff (just opened a Schwab account, looking to do more than simply put money in the bank). Hopefully that helps give you a better perspective of where I’m at.

Go check out Suze Orman’s site, or watch her on CNBC. She’s one of the best personal finance people I’ve ever seen…

Are money management and investing books helpful?

April 27th, 2012 2 comments

I’m sure anyone that’s gone to a book store like chapters has seen that there are entire shelves dedicated to books about money management, investing, and the like. My question is, has anyone read any of those books, like guides to investing, and has anyone had a positive experience and been able to apply some of the things they’ve learned from what they’ve read? Or are the books just shams?

I’ve read heaps of finance books. You just need to find one that suits your investment style. I read a lot about property, because that’s what I’m interested in, and I put into practice a lot of what I read. I’m paying my home loan off in 5 years thanks to finance books.

They aren’t all a sham. Some are, but go to your library and choose a few. Some are very good.
